EndNote Online is the web-based version of EndNote.

With EndNote Online you can work on a range of internet connected devices without the need to install the EndNote software on each one.

EndNote Online does not have the full functionality of EndNote Desktop, so the two are best used in tandem.

In order to use EndNote Online you will need to create an EndNote account.  There are several different paths to creating an EndNote account - we recommend creating your account via EndNote Desktop (instructions in the document below).

For full information on using EndNote Online, see the Online guide below.

Additional resources on using EndNote Online can be found on the Clarivate EndNote Libguide.

When you open EndNote for the first time, you may find it looks alarmingly empty. Your first step will be to create a new Library.

Info!  It is highly recommended that you do not create multiple Libraries.  Instead, create just one Library and use groups to create an organised structure within it.
Warning!  Do not save your EndNote Library to an online file-hosting service such as OneDrive or GoogleDrive - this poses a serious risk of file corruption.

To create a new Library, click 'file' then select 'new'

To see an example of creating a Library, please watch the following video (video will automatically skip to 00:36)

  • Your EndNote Library will come to represent the many hours you have dedicated to your research.
  • It is essential that you protect your work by regularly backing up and syncing your EndNote Library.

There are two ways to achieve this.

  1. Use EndNote Online to sync your Library

    - If you have not already done so, you will need to set up an EndNote account.
    - To sync your EndNote Library from EndNote Desktop, simply click on the sync option.

    - More information about the syncing process  (pdf, 2 pages)

  2. Create back-ups of your Library

    - Your EndNote Library is made up of two components, the filename.enl file and its associated .Data folder.  To save a backup copy of your EndNote Library, you will need to save both components to a compressed folder via the simple instructions below.

    1. Open your EndNote Library in EndNote Desktop.
    2. Click 'file' then select 'Compressed Library (.enxl)'.

    3. Select your preferences then click 'Next'.

    4. Save your compressed file to the desired location

To restore a compressed Library file, open EndNote Desktop and click 'file' then 'open'.  Open the compressed file that contains your back-up.  This will extract the .enl file and the .data folder to the same file where the .enlx file is located. Use EndNote to open the .enl file as you would normally.
